Where the designation comes from
LV 312 is the harness-tape specification written by German vehicle manufacturers and used by their suppliers. It does not describe a product; it describes how a tape is graded, so the same designation can appear on tapes from any number of makers. When it reaches you it is usually copied from a drawing, a customer standard or an incumbent data sheet, and the copying is where meaning tends to get lost.
A single letter is not an instruction
The specification grades a tape on more than one property, and more than one of those scales uses letters. A document that says only “Class C” therefore leaves open which property it refers to. Before treating it as a requirement, establish which scale the letter belongs to — the person who wrote the drawing knows, and a supplier guessing will quote the wrong thing.
Temperature and test conditions
Read the temperature rating together with test duration, cable insulation, ageing conditions and failure criteria. A laboratory rating is not a guarantee of service life or approval for an installation position. Confirm the applicable LV 312 edition and customer specification.
Abrasion travels with its test geometry
Compare abrasion results only when mandrel diameter, tape construction and test procedure match. Request the report and test conditions; do not convert one geometry to another without evidence.
Noise damping comes from the construction
Whether a wrap quiets a rattle depends on how the carrier is built — how lofted it is, how it compresses against the trim it touches. That is a different question from how hot the tape can get. Where a bundle both rubs and rattles, the usual answer is to treat the run as several zones rather than to look for a single grade that scores well everywhere.
Check the complete requirements
A single LV 312 class does not demonstrate every required property. Check the relevant clauses and separate customer requirements for flame behaviour, chemical exposure, halogen content and fogging. Do not claim that these topics are categorically outside every LV 312 edition.
When a document gives you only a letter
Ask three questions of whoever supplied it: which property the letter grades, which edition of the specification it was written against, and which document the result comes from. Any supplier who can answer those three can be compared with another who can. Anyone who cannot is describing a category, not a material.
